They also produced an overcorrection, a broad public perception that hormone therapy is inherently dangerous, that has persisted despite substantial subsequent research that has refined and contextualized those findings considerably.

Current understanding from ongoing research and updated clinical guidelines from major medical societies, including the Menopause Society (formerly NAMS), the Endocrine Society, and others, distinguishes between different hormone types, delivery methods, patient populations, and risk profiles in ways that the original WHI data did not fully capture.

The relationship between hormone therapy and cardiovascular risk depends on timing, hormone type, delivery method, and individual cardiovascular risk profile.
